Supporting Kon Pne Farmers in Developing Sustainable Agriculture

PanNature, in collaboration with the Kbang District Agricultural Service Center in Gia Lai Province, is implementing a pilot project in Kon Pne Commune to promote sustainable, environmentally friendly agricultural practices. As part of the project, two key training sessions were held: “Improved Rice Cultivation (SRI)” and “Organic Fertilizer Composting” in early March 2025.

Kon Pne Commune, located 90km from Kbang District’s center, is a remote area with 435 households, primarily dependent on agriculture and forestry. The overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in traditional farming has led to soil and water pollution, increased production costs, and health concerns for the local population. Addressing these challenges, PanNature introduced the SRI model on a 1-hectare plot in Kon Ktonh Village while promoting organic composting to replace chemical inputs, improve soil quality, and reduce reliance on industrial products. These activities aim to equip locals with knowledge and skills to cut costs, boost productivity, and protect the environment.

In early March 2025, five households in Kon Ktonh Village participated in theoretical and hands-on SRI training. Farmers were guided on transplanting young seedlings, planting 1-2 stalks with wider spacing, using balanced fertilizers, and managing water efficiently. This approach not only reduces seed, fertilizer, and chemical use but also enhances climate resilience and improves livelihoods for participating households.

Additionally, PanNature conducted organic composting training for 30 participants, including representatives from the Community Development Board and households in Kon Pne. The session provided detailed instructions on producing 2 tons of organic fertilizer from locally available materials, helping farmers lower costs, enhance soil quality, and minimize environmental harm. This forms a vital part of the strategy to build sustainable agriculture in the region.

Both programs received strong support from the Kon Pne Commune authorities and enthusiastic participation from the community. Through hands-on guidance, farmers mastered the techniques and are equipped to apply them independently, fostering family economic growth and community health protection. PanNature’s project is expected to lay the foundation for a green, sustainable agricultural model in Kon Pne, contributing to an improved quality of life for local residents.
