Tianjin &#8211; Hebei region saw a 25-percent reduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Harmful pollutants that significantly impact air quality and human health like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and PM10 saw falls\u00a0ranging from 43 percent to 83 percent.<\/p>\n<p>PM2.5 and PM10 refer to tiny airborne particles or droplets with the respective diameters of 2.5 micrometers and 10 micrometers or smaller.<\/p>\n<p>These achievements were driven by such policies as strict limits on coal use, curbs on private vehicles, promotion of electric vehicles, industrial transformation, afforestation, public transport expansion, and regional cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s air pollution success story highlighted four key lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Among them is one where the Chinese city made substantial investment in pollution reduction.<\/p>\n<p>It tightened regulations on\u00a0emissions from traffic and industry, while expanding green spaces, as well as improving public transparency and education to raise awareness about environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>These efforts reduced PM2.5 levels in Beijing by more than 60 percent over a decade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5656\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN-1024x664.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN-1024x664.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN-150x97.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/021224_IQAir-KK-HN.jpg 1301w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Air Quality in Hanoi on December 2, 2024 (Source: www.iqair.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hanoi, with over seven million vehicles and numerous industrial facilities yet to be relocated from inner-city areas, is facing financial difficulties in its environmental programs.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0thick haze\u00a0settles over Hanoi every winter, with its air quality index (AQI) frequently reaching unhealthy and hazardous levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many monitoring stations citywide frequently report AQI readings in the \u2018very unhealthy\u2019 category, posing a growing threat to public health.<\/p>\n<p>Late last month,\u00a0Hanoi\u00a0called for timely updates on air quality and encouraged the use of public transport as well as\u00a0the research of tax incentives for biofuel trading to address severe air pollution, as part of the comprehensive measures directed by the capital administration to deal with the situation.<\/p>\n<p>The action came after a month of hazardous air quality levels posing significant risks to public health.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve significant progress, the Vietnamese capital needs to prioritize funding for pollution control projects, treating it as a long-term investment in public health and sustainable urban development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hanoi should enforce stricter emissions standards for private vehicles, encourage electric vehicle adoption, and accelerate plans to move factories out of inner-city areas.<\/p>\n<p>Expanding green spaces, planting trees, and planning more public areas across the city are essential long-term solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Air pollution is not only an environmental issue, but it also directly impacts public health and sustainable growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Hanoi can learn from Beijing\u2019s experience, the Vietnamese capital\u2019s air pollution success will depend on decisive actions and strong commitments from both authorities and residents.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing took around 20 years to make its air quality better.<\/p>\n<p>It is time for Hanoi to take bold and swift measures to safeguard its residents and the environment.
