{"id":2631,"date":"2017-12-11T08:52:56","date_gmt":"2017-12-11T01:52:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/?p=2631"},"modified":"2018-01-31T17:01:38","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T10:01:38","slug":"flood-rises-due-to-loss-of-1-7mln-ha-protection-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/flood-rises-due-to-loss-of-1-7mln-ha-protection-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Flood rises due to loss of 1.7mln ha protection forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Head of Policy Department of the Center for People and Nature (PanNature) Nguyen Thi Hai Van pointed out a loss of protection forest is the culprit of much flash flood and erosion lately.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting jointly-organized yesterday by PanNature, a Vietnamese not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting and conserving diversity of life and improving human well-being in Vietnam, and the Department of Special Use Forest and Protection Forest Management under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development discussed measures how to protect and restore protection forest in the country in a bid to prevent catastrophic flood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2632 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/111217_Forest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/111217_Forest.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/111217_Forest-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.nature.org.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/111217_Forest-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Forests can retain excess rainwater, prevent extreme run-offs and reduce the damage from flooding. They can also help mitigate the effects of droughts.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, Vietnam plans to raise the amount of protection forest to 5.68 million ha by 2020 with 93 percent of protection forest, citing the country\u2019s forestry development strategy.<\/p>\n<p>However, in reality, people are destroying drastically protection forest in localities in northwest, central highlands and south-central Vietnam; the size of the country\u2019s protection forest is in fact decreasing at an alarm level. Loss of forest is the culprit for devastating flood for recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam lost 1.7 million hectare of protection forest from 2004 to 2014 of which 1.43 million hectare of natural forest disappearing in the country.
